Superintendent's Message

Camden City Public Schools are gaining progress in all areas. Providing students with the best we have to offer remains a focus as we enter the 2009-2010 school year. Continuing in the process, we are stepping up our efforts in curriculum and instruction to maintain the progress thus far.

New schools are emerging to ensure the learning process is maintained in a safe environment. Keeping students safe is one of our primary goals. The Henry B. Wilson Elementary School and the Dudley Elementary School will open their doors in September with state of the art facilities for enhanced learning experiences. Construction on the Morgan Village Middle School is in progress with a projected opening date of September 2010.

Our students have continued to show improvement in language arts literacy and mathematics. Test scores have risen in both areas of instruction. To further this progress the district has implemented a series of benchmarks that include testing throughout the school year. These benchmarks will allow staff to gauge student progress. Also, the 100 Book Challenge program has been implemented in the elementary schools to challenge students to read more which increases their knowledge in all aspects of learning. The grey colored numbers on the calendar indicate how many books students should read. Incentives are given once students reach certain levels.

In January 75 students traveled to Maryland, Virginia and Washington to compete in the Heritage Music Festival during inauguration weekend. These students returned with several medals and awards for competing and visited Washington, D.C. to witness the inauguration of the first African American president. Because of the efforts of the Camden Board of Education Foundation high school students have received over $75,000 in scholarships. These students have enrolled in secondary education institutions like Rutgers University, Lincoln University, and Syracuse University Wilberforce University. This includes five members of the first graduating class of the MetEast High School. Our elementary and middle school students are participating in the Future Scholars program at Rutgers University and have the potential to receive tuition free education after completing the four-year program.Camden City Public School students have proven that they have the ability to excel. Our desire is to continue their progress and stir their imaginations to reach beyond the boundaries of Camden Schools. With a renewed faith and direction, we can ensure that each student receives the opportunity to compete with students across the state and the country.
