Challenge Your Mind

Chess is a recreational and competitive strategy game of skill for two players, where the outcome is determined mainly by mental skill, rather than by pure  chance.  One benefit of games of skill is that they are a means of exploring one's own capabilities. Games encourage the player to look at, understand, and experience things. They teach people lessons about themselves and possibly the world, and allow such insights to be passed on to others.  Chess is also advocated as a way of enhancing mental prowess.  There is a flourishing movement to use the game of chess as a tool to aid the intellectual development of young people. Encouraged by the promising results of a number of research studies, school districts and organizations across the globe are implementing chess programs.

The Game of Chess is not merely an idle amusement; several very valuable qualities of the mind, useful in the course of human life, are to be acquired and strengthened by it, so as to become habits ready on all occasions; for life is a kind of Chess, in which we have often points to gain, and competitors or adversaries to contend with, and in which there is a vast variety of good and ill events, that are, in some degree, the effect of prudence, or the want of it.  By playing at Chess then, we may learn: 1st, Foresight, which looks a little into futurity, and considers the consequences that may attend an action ... 2nd, Circumspection, which surveys the whole Chess-board, or scene of action: - the relation of the several Pieces, and their situations; ... 3rd, Caution, not to make our moves too hastily...."

The Drill Team performs at all special school events. Leadership, dancing ability, and dedication are required of each member. Members are chosen by try-out.  The drill team perform numerous formations that have a swing flair. At times, the music department lends a hand by incorporating a group of student drummers to emulate the drum and bugle corps that were popular in earlier times.  The primary job of the Drill Team is to help keep the teams spirits up, and their aim is to encourage them to bring home the WIN!

Try-outs for Drill Team and Pep-squad are held in early October, and are open to all grade levels.

The job of the Pep/Drum Squad is to promote school spirit and enthusiasm at school rallies, games and competitions year round.  Students with exceptional talent for cheerleading and/or song are chosen by a panel of judges.

The drum squad provides drum beats for events involving drill squad, at home basketball games and special events.  One of the advantages of joining the drum squad is that it encourages the student to read and perform from drum notation and the student learns to play various forms of drums.

The sound of drums beating during a home game adds to the excitement of those attending school games in support of their home team.  It also tends to heighten the excitement factor for those participating in the game - like a drum calling for the WIN!

The objective of the Mathletes Club is to help students enjoy math and improve their results.  Participating in the Mathletes Club encourages an intellectual culture, fosters and reinforces classroom instruction and encourages teamwork.  Students will refresh basic math skills and there will be peer tutoring and homework help for all students.

The word "Mathlete" is usually used to refer to someone very dedicated to the math team of a primary school or secondary school.  More specifically, a Mathlete is to the math team as an athlete is to a sports team. This word is especially ironic because stereotypically, those who do well in math team tend to be  diametrically opposite to real athletes. The term is a registered trademark of the "MathCounts" organization.

Students joining the club will compete individually and as teams in written and fast-paced oral matches challenging their skills in mathematical problems.  Matheletes also compete with other middle school students.  Club membership  is available to pupils through the eighth grade.

This is a great club for students aiming to go beyond minimum academic requirements.  It's all about raising the bar for students.  It also augments standard curricula so that gifted pupils are not under challenged.

What's a Poem?

Chess

The creation of poetry is a great reading skill tool. It is an imaginative awareness of experience expressed through meaning, sound, and rhythmic language choices to evoke an emotional response. Poetry has been known to employ meter and rhyme, but this is by no means necessary. Poetry is an ancient form that has gone through numerous and drastic reinvention over time. The very nature of poetry as an authentic and individual mode of expression makes it nearly impossible to define.

Students can greatly benefit from participating in a poetry club - It definitely helps to improve their understanding of the meaning of words and the concept in which they are used to express oneself.

The enjoyment of sharing the poems with classmates and learning to read them independently  —  even if it seems like mere memorizing at the outset it can be an integral part of a reader's experience with printed words.

Encourage your child to join.
