Mission Statement

We believe that guidance and counseling are vital elements in the Camden City Public School District. These two components are specifically designed to assist all students through a clearly articulated program. Our program utilizes an integrated approach that is to be assessed by students on a regular basis. Guidance represents a comprehensive program of activities, which is an integral part of the Division of Support Services in the district.

Guidance is a process of supporting students to develop knowledge of self as a unique individual in relationship to the environment. Counseling is the art of helping people. It is student-centered. The Guidance program provides for the personal, educational and career needs of all students in grades K through 12.

Guidance draws on all appropriate resources to secure the maximum benefits for our students. Although school counselors take the lead in carrying out program strategies, administrators, teachers, parents and community agencies are an invaluable part of the counseling team. Our Guidance Department depends upon the active participation of all individuals who care about the optimum development of our students.

Furthermore, the Guidance Department provides students with information and experiences that will develop positive attitudes and values. The program helps students acquire life-long learning skills needed for making thoughtful decisions and problem-solving.

What does a counselor do?

The middle school counselor's role encompasses counseling, consulting and coordination, and a

comprehensive school counseling program covers three areas of student development which include, Academic, Career and Personal and Social Behaviors.

The school counselor may deliver services through a variety of methods, such as individual counseling, group counseling, classroom guidance, consultation and coordination.  Guidance services are an integral part of the school program, and counselors serve as liaison persons for parents and students with teachers and administrators.

Middle School counseling is also a unique opportunity to guide early adolescent students through challenging years of development, as most children change fairly rapidly during these years, and the diversity of their growth requires a program which can deal effectively with individual needs.  Some developmental tasks confronting the Middle School student include:

  • Becoming oriented to the new school

  • Forming new relationships with peers and adults

  • Evolving a good self-concept and sense of role identity

  • Coping with physical changes

  • Growing in responsibility and independence

  • Clarifying values and goals

  • Learning appropriate study techniques to achieve at capacity

  • Acquiring techniques for self-appraisal, information gathering, and decision making

  • Making tentative career choices and educational plans

We are excited to have this opportunity to assist in the educational and emotional development of your child as a component of the student/school/home team.
