In order to address deficiencies in Language Arts
Literacy, Lanning Square implements a 120 minute Literacy block
at every grade level. Literacy coaches work with grade 5 and 6
teachers to provide an intensive cross-curricular 60 minute writing
block daily. DIBELS (Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy
Skills) and DRA (Developmental Reading Assessment) assessments are administered at all grade levels to
identify those students in need of strategic intervention. Reading
mentors are assigned to all identified students. Additionally,
Storytown, a 2009 Harcourt Brace Reading program is being
implemented in grades Kindergarten, one and two, while grades three
through six utilize the Trophies reading program. Further,
100 Book Challenge, a program designed to encourage recreational
reading, is implemented at all grade levels.
In the area of Mathematics, a 90 minute block has been
scheduled at all grade levels. Students identified through analysis
of ASK testing will receive additional in-class
support. Special education students in grades three, four, five and six
have been mainstreamed to benefit from instruction in the general
education curriculum. Parent volunteers provide additional
support and Special Area schedules have been designed to allow for
additional in-class support. Additionally, Communicator Math has
been initiated in Grade 5 and on-going Professional Development
has been scheduled to insure positive impact on student achievement.
