Superintendent's Corner

Superintendent's CornerDear Students, Parents, and Guardians,
Welcome back for the 2016-17 school year!
After a busy summer, I believe our schools are better set up for success than at any point in my full three years in Camden. There are many changes, small and large, that give me confidence that students, teachers, and parents will be well supported for the year ahead.
We’ve made improvements to our curricula and our teaching practices based on teachers’ feedback. Our school leaders have received more training this summer than ever before. We’ve added positions in our schools to manage all the work that needs to be done outside of the classroom to maintain a well-run school building, giving our school leaders the time to focus on improving student learning. We've introduced new staff responsible for family and community engagement, and we’ve provided training to the educators taking up these new roles. Elementary schools now have expertly trained reading specialists and redesigned literacy blocks, and the comprehensive high schools now have deans of climate and culture. These changes were all made with one goal in mind - to ensure Camden children receive high-quality instruction from their classroom teachers each day.
In addition, we’ve reviewed hundreds of special needs students’ individual education plans to ensure they’re getting the services they need and deserve. Camden High is now made up of two academies, and Hatch and MetEast now make up the Camden Big Picture Learning Academy. High school students will now take the ACT and SAT during the school day and will spend less time overall taking tests. And 200 of our students who are most at-risk will receive intensive supports for their whole family to help them progress toward graduation and a successful life.
This is a partial list of the steps we’ve taken to give teachers and schools the support they need to ensure all Camden students are set along a path toward college or a meaningful career. Ultimately, we know that the proof is in the pudding, and that when our dedicated teachers and school-based staff get to work this year, it will be there efforts that shape and mold our students' futures. It is because of these hard working educators, and the dedicated parents and community leaders of Camden, that I am truly optimistic about the 2016-17 school year.
I wish you a great year of learning and growing.
