Family University

Our vision for CCSD Family University is that every CCSD family is equipped and empowered to advocate and partner with schools to ensure every child has access to a quality education and achieves excellence in school. Family University will accomplish this vision in partnership with the Mayor’s Office, and several community based organizations, to provide a wide variety of offerings to enrich, engage, and empower parents, and caregivers as equal partners in the education, and well-being of their children.

CCSD Family University is designed to help increase parents’ feelings of efficacy, the feeling that they can impact their child’s learning in ways that produces the most profound effects on student outcomes. The CCSD Office of Family and Community Engagement has defined a major component of their core work as building the capacity of families to actively support their child’s learning and advocate effectively on their behalf. Building parent capacity is critical, particularly among parents from marginalized communities that are deemed to be outside of the dominant culture.

Our theory of change is: If we provide all CCSD parents with the knowledge and experiences that build their capacity to advocate and support not only their child’s learning, but their own personal learning, then parents will become more engaged and intentional in demanding and supporting quality education for their children in ways that result in improved student outcomes and school improvement.

Family University will use an array of training methodologies in the delivery of each strands’ course offerings. Course work will be developed based on adult learning principles and competency based learning.
